What is the "DSS" audio file format, and why would I use it?

"DSS" (Digital Speech Standard) sound files are every bit as high quality as "WAV" files, but 15 to 28 times smaller. "DSS" files also contain information such as time, date, and length of recording, along with the ID number of the person recording. A "DSS" 4-minute recording would be about 450K, while a WAV of that same size is over 5 megabytes. Its reduced size makes DSS particularly effective for e-mail or network transfer.

What voice-recognition applications does the D-1000 support?

The D-1000 is bundled with customized ViaVoice Transcription software. Users of older Windows® operating systems can update this custom software to IBM ViaVoice® 98; however, Olympus supports only the version bundled with its recorders.

Updating the bundled DSS Player software to its latest release provides support for Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9 Preferred and IBM ViaVoice USB Pro Version 10, both of which are supported by current Windows operating systems. Check with each voice-recognition software vendor to ensure its compatibility with specific platforms.

Macintosh operating systems do not support the *.WAV file format and so do not support transcription files created by the DS-1000.

If I use "Dragon NaturallySpeaking," can I use the D-1000?

Dragon NaturallySpeaking users need to perform an extra step to use the D-1000. Once the files are downloaded into the computer, click on the file to be transcribed and then click File > Save As." You can then convert the "DSS" file to a "WAV" file.  (Note that the "WAV" file is much larger than the "DSS" file.)  You will then be able to transcribe the file in Dragon NaturallySpeaking.

As shipped, the D-1000 supports Dragon NaturallySpeaking 3.0; updating the bundled DSS Player software to its current release provides support for Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9 Preferred.

If I upgrade my IBM ViaVoice software, can I still use my D-1000?

Updating the bundled DSS Player software to its latest release provides support for IBM ViaVoice USB Pro Version 10.

Please note that Olympus can only provide support for ViaVoice Transcription software that comes with the D-1000. How do I download my files if I have a desktop computer?

You have two options.

  1. Purchase an Olympus Miniature Card Reader/Writer (Stock number 147-450). This will plug into your parallel port and read the miniature flash cards supplied with the D1000.
  2. Purchase and install an internal PCMCIA drive for your desktop. Then use the supplied PCMCIA adapter. This is the fastest option for download time. You can purchase the PCMCIA drive from Antec or Kangaru.

Can I purchase additional flash memory miniature cards?

Olympus no longer sells these cards.

Can I hook up a footswitch to the D-1000?

Yes. A "Transcription Accessory Kit" (stock number 147455) includes a footswitch, keyboard adapter, and headset. The keyboard adapter enables you to control playback of downloaded files on your PC with the Olympus footswitch. This works particularly well for medical or legal applications. Unfortunately, this is no longer available.

My "DSS" file downloaded satisfactorily, but the total time listed is only three minutes; my recording was ten minutes. What's wrong?

Most likely, you only hit "Stop" once on the recorder before ejecting the Miniature Card. Hitting "Stop" a second time creates the file header information, including recording time. Don't worry. The recording is still there. Put the card back into the recorder and insert a few seconds of blank audio into the file at the end of the recording. Then hit "Stop" twice. All of the header information will update.

I have Windows 98, and when I insert my PC Card Adapter, it causes a "Fatal Exception Error." What should I do?

Future versions of the software will solve this problem, but Windows 98 users should read below for revised installation procedures.

Customers attempting to use the CA-1 PCMCIA miniature card reader/writer with laptops running the Win 98 OS will encounter a "Fatal Exception Error" after inserting the adapter card into the machine. This is due to the incompatibility of the Win 95 drivers running under Windows 98. The following instructions will remove the old drivers and install the new files needed to use the CA-1 PCMCIA Adapter Card under Windows 98.

Please note that you will need the Windows 98 Installation CD-ROM for this procedure.

Access the "Device Manager" tab in System Properties (open "My Computer" > "Control Panel" > "System" > "Device Manager" tab).
Locate the "PCMCIA socket" item. Click on the "+" symbol to expand the tree details. You should see the PCMCIA sockets installed on your machine (typically there are 2 sockets). One at a time, highlight the socket driver and delete by clicking on the "Remove" button.
Shut Down > Restart the laptop.
As the machine is restarting, Windows will detect new hardware and begin adding PCMCIA socket drivers. You may need to insert the Windows 98 Installation CD if prompted. Restart the machine if you are prompted.
Check that the PCMCIA socket(s) have been re-installed by opening "My Computer" > "Control Panel" > "System" > "Device Manager" tab > PCMCIA socket. You should see the same items that you removed in step #2. If possible, verify that your PCMCIA socket(s) are working by inserting and using a known working card such as a PC Card modem.
Insert the Windows 98 Installation CD into your CD-ROM drive (or remove and reinsert the CD if it was already in the drive).
Browse the contents of the Win 98 CD and navigate to the "Drivers" > "Storage" > "FTL" folder (\drivers\storage\ftl).
Find the "TRUEFFS.INF" file. Right-click on the icon and select "Install" from the menu options.
Insert the Olympus CA1 PC Card Adapter with a miniature flash card onboard (if the mini card is blank, make a quick recording on the D1000 before inserting the card).
Windows 98 will detect new hardware and automatically install the drivers for the Flash Miniature Card.
The Olympus miniature card PC Adapter should be fully operational now. To verify proper operation, go to "My computer" and check for a new drive letter assigned to the Olympus PCMCIA card (it will be a "removable disk"). Double-click on the icon to open the drive. You should see DSS speech files displayed. Double-click on a DSS file to automatically launch the DSS Player software. You should hear the speech file being played back.

I have Windows NT. Can I use the D-1000?

The D-1000 does not support the Windows® NT operating system.

My PC can't hear anything that I say when I try to enroll with IBM ViaVoice. What should I do?

Follow the on-screen prompts to be sure everything is set correctly.

If you still can't get the PC to recognize your voice, make sure that the line-in cable is plugged into the "Line-In" jack on your PC. If you do not have a line-in jack, you cannot use this product with your PC. Also, it's possible that your sound card is not 100% Soundblaster compatible. If this is the case, all voice recognition products will be incompatible with your PC until you upgrade your sound card. Check with your PC manufacturer to find out exactly what kind of sound card you have.

How can I improve my speech recognition to acceptable levels?

First, make sure that your recording environment is quiet enough to allow accurate speech recognition. If you really need to record in loud areas, try the Olympus noise-cancellation microphone Model ME-12 (stock number 145-031).

If the area is quiet, position the D1000 correctly, about 5 cm (2 inches) away from your mouth and make sure use your own speech files, not someone else's. If recognition is still bad, you may want to do a new speech enrollment. You may have done your previous enrollment incorrectly or in a high-noise environment. Click on "Start / Programs / IBM ViaVoice / Tools / Enrollment" to add another enrollment.

How do I convert "DSS" files to "WAV" files?

Once you have downloaded the files into your PC, click on the file you want to transcribe, and then click "File / Save As" You then can convert the "DSS" file to a "WAV" file. You should note that the "WAV" file is very large.

If I want to share a "DSS" file with a colleague, what software will he or she need?

If your colleague can download the Olympus DSS-Lite Player from this free site, he or she will be able to listen to any previously recorded "DSS" file.

I made a recording and cannot launch the "Transcribe" icon. What's wrong?

You are probably recording in "Long" mode. Move the "Rec Time" switch on the left side to "Stnd" to switch into "Standard" mode.
